How do you get space?

Over the past few months, bouldering has come to hold a very special place in my life. The physicality of the sport is great but more than that it’s the mental aspect of planning exactly how you’re going to get yourself to the finish before your feet have even left the ground. It has truly become a moving meditation for me.

Jesse…

Where are you from?

I’m originally from Lancaster (Ohio not Pennsylvania) and moved up to Columbus for graduate school in 2008. Over the past decade(+) here I've explored many various parts of the city and all it has to offer. Columbus is a city of growth in many ways and with each passing year it becomes more my home.

What's your sign?

I'm an Aries through and through.

- "When you know yourself, you're empowered. When you accept yourself, you're invincible."

What's your training background?

I work full time as an outpatient hand therapist specializing in upper extremity injuries. Once I found yoga, I began to realize the connection between my job and my practice. I went through yoga teacher training with Laural Holdory in 2014, traveling to Norway for certification in hatha and ashtanga yoga. My primary practice and study is in Ashtanga yoga and I've maintained a 5-6 day/week ashtanga practice since 2013 with my teacher Taylor Hunt. I've also completed a mentorship program with Josie where I focused on developing my voice as a teacher, my creative side and furthering my passion for sharing restorative yoga.

Mentors/people who inspire your teaching?

I am consistently inspired by the practice of Ashtanga yoga and my teacher Taylor Hunt. I also feel EXTREMELY grateful to have completed the mentorship with Josie Schweitzer and am constantly inspired by all she does. The space she has created and the message she is putting out there resonates strongly with me. Other teachers I'm obsessed with include the restorative yoga teachings of Jillian Pransky and Judith Hanson Lasater.

Favorite pose?

Adho mukha shvanasana (downward-facing dog); So much to learn from and feel in this pose; teaches me to look at life from a different perspective.

Least favorite pose?

Purvottanasana (upward facing plank); ugh, can't.

Favorite music/artists?

I'm always up for listening to bluesy, old school rock music. Lately I've been really into the Black Keys Spotify station.

Best place to eat in Columbus?

They practically know my husband and I's name/order/favorite number at Northstar so.......

Favorite spot in Columbus to chill?

Honestly my couch and my backyard. We have a beautiful garden and screened in back porch that is lovely to enjoy all seasons.

How do you get space?

I get space by making time for myself. Making time for my practice, creating space for my breath, and honoring the space in my own skin. Its taken me a long time to allow myself the space to grow into who I've become today and now I excited to keep on with this journey.

How do you get space?

I get space by submerging myself in nature. Turning off my phone and eliminating connections to reality is what allows myself to truly replenish my own energy and get back to a clearer head-space. I spend a lot of my vacation time hiking and camping or just being outside as much as possible.
